A patient may be undergoing transfer from one facility to another, or to their dwelling. If the NEMT service provider has a background in EMT, or hires personnel to provide such, the benefits are several.

-Depending on type of service provided, a vehicle may require a lift for wheelchair users or other disabilities. The trained personnel will be familiar with such equipment.
-A trained transporter can provide sufficient medical supervision if such is warranted. Vitals may be monitored, or medications administered if the trip and schedule are the same.
-During long distance transport, an EMT may provide a calming sedative at the outset to help the patient relax if so desired.
-The trained personnel may provide respiratory therapy or monitor medical devices during lengthier transports if so required.

Comfort and Amenities

Per ground transport NEMT services may use a limo, cab, van or other type of medical vehicle for operations. The term “ambulette service” is also applied to those offering non-emergency medical transportation. Noting how the vehicle used is similar or different from a conventional ambulance may be helpful to those considering utilizing the service.

Long distance medical transport, air or ground, may include overhead television or DVD for entertainment. ACC Medlink offers luxurious shuttle busses that’s like a hospital on wheels. This would be similar to that offered on most commercial airlines. One would need to check this with the service being considered.

Air transport will include appropriate heating or air-conditioning per the time of year and climate.

Many NEMT services offer the provision for a caregiver or family member to accompany the one being transported. A reduced fare or no fare may be available to the one accompanying the client. This will need to be clarified with the given service at time of scheduling.

Non-emergency medical transportation is a public transportation and shared ride service. Transportation may be via city bus, specialized medical vehicle, or transportation in other types of vehicle based on medical need. There is a stipulation surrounding use of the service. If neighbors, friends, relatives, or voluntary organizations can transport one to their medical appointment(s), then rides are not available through the transport manager.
